What actually breaks inside a robot vacuum
A robot vacuum is built from six assemblies, and almost every fault starts in one of them. Knowing what each one does makes it easier to see why your robot stopped.
Wheels and drives
Two drive wheels with their own motors and spring suspension. Hair in the axles and worn gears are the fault we see most.

Brushes
The main brush and side brush sweep debris towards the suction inlet. Once hair wraps around them, the drive overheats and stops.

Suction motor and filter
The fan creates the airflow and the filter holds the dust. A clogged filter strains the motor and suction gets weaker and weaker.

Mopping module
The water tank, pump and nozzles wet the mop pad. Limescale blocks the nozzles — water stops dripping or floods out.

LiDAR and sensors
The spinning laser turret maps your home; cliff and wall sensors keep the robot off stairs and walls. When the turret stops, the robot no longer knows where it is.

Common robot vacuum faults
Customers usually say "it won't move" or "it can't find the dock", and there are several possible causes behind each. Here is what we find once the robot is open, and where the price starts.

- Hair and thread wound around the wheel axle — the drive jams
- A worn wheel gear or a burnt-out wheel motor
- A failed wheel-drop sensor: the robot thinks it has been lifted
- Dirty cliff sensors underneath — the robot refuses to drive on

Over the last 12 months the average robot vacuum repair bill was about €61. If we carry out the repair, the diagnostic fee comes off the final price. If you decide against it, you pay for diagnostics only.
Roborock and Xiaomi error codes
The robot reports a fault with a number or a voice message. The table lists the most common codes on Roborock (S5, S6, E series) and Xiaomi Mi Robot, what they mean, and what to try yourself before bringing the robot in.

| 1 | LiDAR turret blocked or not spinning | Check that the turret turns freely by hand and nothing is stuck under its cover. If the error keeps coming back, the turret belt or motor is worn. |
| 2 | Front bumper stuck | Tap the bumper a few times so it springs back and clear the gap around it. If that fails, the bumper sensor is faulty. |
| 3 | Wheel suspended | Place the robot on a flat floor. If the error stays on the floor, the wheel sensor or spring has failed. |
| 4 | Cliff sensor error | Wipe the sensors underneath with a dry cloth. Very dark rugs sometimes confuse them. |
| 5 | Main brush jammed | Remove the brush and unwind the hair from the axle and both ends. |
| 6 | Side brush jammed | Remove the side brush and clean the shaft. If the bare shaft turns stiffly, the motor has failed. |
| 7 | Wheel jammed | Turn the wheels by hand and pull the hair out of the axles. If a wheel is stiff or crunches, the module is replaced. |
| 8 | Robot trapped | Move the robot to an open spot. If it keeps happening in the open, we check the sensors. |
| 9 | Dustbin or filter not installed | Push the bin in until it clicks. If it is in and the error remains, the bin sensor is faulty. |
| 10 | Filter wet or blocked | Clean the filter and leave it to dry for a day. Never fit a wet filter — it damages the motor. |
| 13 | Charging error | Wipe the contacts on the robot and the dock and check the dock cable. If that fails, it is the battery or the charging circuit. |
| 14 | Battery error | Let the robot cool down and try again. If it repeats, the battery is replaced, from €35. |
Newer Roborock, Xiaomi, Dreame and Ecovacs models speak the error aloud or spell it out in the app, but the causes are the same. If your robot shows a different code, tell us when you drop it off — it speeds up diagnostics.
What to check yourself before bringing it in
Quite a few robots arrive with a fault that five minutes of cleaning would have fixed. Before you bring yours in, try these steps.
Five-minute check
- Remove the main brush and unwind the hair from the axle and ends
- Turn the wheels by hand — they should spin freely, without crunching
- Clean the filter and the bin; leave a wet filter to dry for a day
- Wipe the cliff sensors underneath and the charging contacts with a dry cloth
- Check that the LiDAR turret spins and nothing is stuck underneath it
- Update the firmware in the app and start the robot from the dock
When to bring it in straight away
If the error returns after these steps, the robot shuts down mid-clean, you smell burning, the battery is swollen, or the robot has been in water. Do not charge a swollen battery and do not switch on a wet robot — that is how most boards burn out.
How often to clean the inside
In homes with pets or long-haired family members, hair builds up in the wheel and brush bearings where you cannot reach it without opening the robot. In that case an internal clean once a year is worth it, before the drives start failing.
