What actually breaks inside a coffee machine
Almost every fault in an automatic machine comes from one of six assemblies. They are listed in the order water and coffee travel towards the cup, which makes it easier to tell where your machine stopped.
Water tank and filter
The level sensor scales up and the machine asks for water although the tank is full. The water filter clogs alongside it.

Pump
Builds roughly 15 bar of pressure. A tired pump hums louder than it used to, and coffee comes out in drops or stops entirely.

Boiler or thermoblock
Heats water to around 90–95 °C. Scale on the walls and the coffee comes out lukewarm, or the machine stops heating at all.

Grinder
The burrs grind beans before every cup. A stone caught between the burrs or worn burrs leave the machine turning with nothing to show.

Brew unit
Presses the ground coffee and pushes water through it. Coffee oils harden and the mechanism jams — the most common fault in automatic machines.

Milk system
The frother or the milk container with its tubes. Dried milk blocks the air intake and the foam stops forming.

Common coffee machine faults
From the outside most faults look the same: the machine hums and the cup stays empty. Here is what we usually find once it is open, and where the price starts.
What we usually find
- A foreign object between the burrs — a stone from the beans or a metal fragment
- Worn burrs: the grind is uneven and the coffee turns sour
- A broken or slipping grinder drive
- A blocked channel between the grinder and the brew unit

- A jammed brew unit, or one caked with coffee oils
- A worn pump that no longer builds pressure
- Scale in the water circuit and valves
- Air in the system after the water tank was removed

- A scaled or burnt-out heating unit — boiler or thermoblock

If we carry out the repair, the diagnostic fee comes off the final price. If you decide against it, you pay for diagnostics only and take the machine home.
Coffee machine servicing and maintenance
Most of the failures we see start the same way — scale and coffee oils. The machine still runs, but the coffee already tastes different and the pump is pushing against resistance until one day it stops.
What the built-in cleaning program does not do
The built-in program pushes liquid through the water circuit. It never reaches inside the brew unit, the milk system channels or the boiler walls — and that is exactly where the deposits stay. That is why a machine that is "cleaned regularly" still arrives a couple of years later with a caked brew unit.
How often it is worth doing
It depends on water hardness and cups per day. Vilnius water is hard, so a home machine in daily use is usually due about once a year; an office machine running all day, more often. We can be more precise once we see inside — the layer of scale says more than any counter.
What a service covers
- We strip the machine down, not only the parts that come out by hand
- Scale is removed from the boiler, hoses and valves
- The brew unit is washed free of coffee oils and its moving parts re-greased
- Milk system channels and nozzle are cleared
- The grinder is cleaned and the burrs checked for wear
- Hardened seals are replaced, pressure and temperature checked
Brands we repair
Automatic machines from different makers are built along the same lines, so the faults repeat. What differs is access: on some the brew unit slides out through a door, on others the casing has to come off first.
DeLonghi
Magnifica S and Evo, Dinamica, Eletta, PrimaDonna, Rivelia, the ECAM range, Dedica, La Specialista
The brew unit slides out through a side door, so it can be rinsed at home. If the machine still asks for it after a rinse, the unit drive has jammed or the seals have worn.
Jura
E, S, Z, X, J, ENA and WE series
The brew unit is fixed in place and can only be reached with the machine open. Cleaning a Jura is therefore always a strip-down job, not a rinse cycle through the system.
Philips and Saeco
Series 2200–5500, LatteGo, Xelsis, Incanto, Lirika, Intelia
The AquaClean filter slows scale down but does not stop it — in hard Vilnius water deposits still build up. LatteGo usually stops frothing because the air channel has furred up with coffee oils, not because the pump has failed.
Bosch and Siemens
VeroCup, VeroBar, VeroAroma, EQ.3–EQ.9, TI and TE series
These are the same machines in different casings — the EQ and TI series share their assemblies, so the same faults come back on both. Spare parts often fit either one.
We also repair: Krups, Nivona, Melitta, Gaggia, Nespresso (Original and Vertuo), Miele, AEG, Smeg, Sage, Tchibo, Electrolux and other domestic or small office machines.
What the error messages actually mean
The message on the display shows the symptom, not the cause. Below are the cases we see most often and what we find behind them once the machine is open.
- “Insert brew unit”
DeLonghi, Philips, Saeco
What we find: The machine cannot detect the unit. First take it out, rinse it in warm water without detergent and push it back until it clicks. If the message returns, the unit drive has jammed or the seals have worn.
- “Fill water tank” with a full tank
Bosch, Siemens, DeLonghi
What we find: Almost always a level sensor furred up with scale, or an air lock in the water circuit. The tank and float themselves are usually fine.
- “Clean brew unit” when it is already clean
Bosch, Siemens
What we find: The drive position sensor no longer registers the unit reaching its end position. Cleaning does not help here — the drive itself needs attention.
- The descaling program never finishes or restarts
Bosch, Siemens, Philips
What we find: The water circuit passes less liquid than the program expects, so it never gets its completion signal and starts over. The deposits are past the point where a program can flush them out.
- All lights flashing at once
Philips, Saeco
What we find: A control board or sensor fault. Before opening anything we check the supply and the connectors — an oxidised contact is a common culprit rather than the board itself.
- “Fill the system”, or the coffee suddenly turns weak
Jura
What we find: Air in the water circuit or a pump that has lost pressure. The same message also appears when an internal hose is blocked.
